The globally celebrated day is a reminder for us to have accountability for the planet on which we live. The way we handle our planet has a direct impact on how it responds—as a threat or a blessing. Future generations depend on us to make the right choices that protect the Earth’s natural resources. Some of the core issues we need to reflect on today include climate change, conservation and biology, energy, food and agriculture, recycling and waste reduction, advocacy and education, and sustainable development and practices.
Ways tech companies can honor Earth Day
- Reduce energy consumption: Tech companies can manage energy within their offices and data centers by ensuring cooling systems are in place, using updated software that utilizes less energy, transitioning to cloud services, and shutting down hardware that is not in use.
- Reuse or donate old electronics: As part of reducing electronic waste, companies can donate functional devices to institutions that can put them to better use.
- Promote remote work and virtual meetings: The COVID period saw a rise in remote work due to social distancing; this has continued to be an option for companies that give their employees the flexibility to work from home, reducing office spaces and carbon emissions due to travel commutes.
- Offset carbon footprint: As companies continue to migrate to environmentally friendly operations, tech companies can invest in renewable energy projects and purchase carbon credits to mitigate their contribution to carbon emissions.
- Green products and services: Tech companies can also shift to the production of environmentally friendly products and services, such as the resourceful use of software that supports sustainability, waste reduction, and energy management.
- Volunteer and community engagements: Establishing partnerships with other companies as well as communities in engagements that contribute positively to the environment; local clean-ups; and tree-planting programs.
- Sustainability initiatives and awareness: Tech companies can organize educational campaigns, offering incentives for eco-friendly project competitions, community waste disposals, and recycling programs, which they can leverage on their social media platforms to ensure a wide reach to share stories and campaigns on safeguarding the planet.
At the heart of COP28 is ensuring a safe planet for future generations and taking into account the necessary measures to ensure that is achieved.
